The Serenity Prayer

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

It’s funny, almost anyone you ask can tell you the serenity prayer. Really, you could stop people on the street and they could tell you what it is. That is how incredibly massive the number of people who have battled addiction themselves or who’s lives have been affected. It has truly cut a great deal of us to our very core. Whether it is the child who hides under her covers to escape the terrifying sounds of her parents fighting, which is fueled by alcohol like kerosene to a fire. The lost soul, standing in the dark, desperate and willing to do anything to get their next fix. Who would ever think we would reach a point where we would not just be walking but willingly racing to our deaths? Yet, we also find there is light in our darkness. Whether it be the Serenity Prayer, 12 steps, a program, or a Higher Power, it is only imperative that we find the path to our sobriety. This is not only for us but for the ones we love, for our futures, and the futures of mankind. This may sound, to some, a bit dramatic, but in truth addiction can and has killed more than any other sickness or disease.
